5 Questions for The Fairy Godmother
The Magical Voice of Roanna Kitchen
It was some kind of magic that brought Roanna Kitchen to the auditions for VOS Theatre's Cinderella but we are thrilled that she took on the role of The Fairy Godmother. Take a look at her resume (seriously, check out her Bio on her website: RoannaKitchen.com )
It reads like a whos-who of opera performances, touring and musical versatility. Not only does she have Masters and Undergraduate degrees in music but she has studied and performed in Toronto, New York, Lunenberg, Paris, Prague, Turkey, Italy and so many other places. She sings in German, French, Italian and English. Her talents extend to film, tv and voiceover work as well. In fact in 2003 she appeared in a Disney Cinderella doll TV commerical. Perhaps a prescient indicator of her role in the VOS production.
These 5 Questions give us a little insight into her incredible depth of experience and talent.
Why did you want to play "Fairy Godmother": I was immediately drawn to the Fairy Godmother’s flair — she embodies glitz and glamour, but beneath all the spectacle is a genuinely kind, generous spirit who simply wants to help others. I love the playfulness of the role, as well as the depth that lies underneath the magic.
What is your "dream" role for a show yet to come: My ultimate dream role would be Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia. I adore everything about this musical — the music just radiates joy and energy. The mother–daughter relationship at the heart of the show also resonates deeply with me, as it reminds me so much of my own relationship with my mom, which would make the experience incredibly personal to perform on stage.
How do you compare to the Fairy Godmother? ie what characteristics do you share and/or not share: Like the Fairy Godmother, I’m playful at heart and genuinely love helping others whenever I can. I may not have a wand or a pumpkin carriage on standby, but I do enjoy embracing a little sparkle, imagination, and “main character” energy when the moment calls for it. Channeling her magic is a joyful reminder to lead with kindness, curiosity, and a sense of fun.
You obviously love performing, when did you realize that: I realized my love for performing around the age of nine, when I began performing regularly with my parents. We formed a jazz trio and performed often throughout the Prince Edward County area. Even now, when I visit them from Toronto, we still perform together — nothing compares to the joy of making music as a family.
What kind of training have you done or are still doing: I hold both a Master’s and an Undergraduate degree in Voice Performance from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, where I focused on opera and art song. Training has always been an ongoing and joyful part of my life, and I continue to take voice lessons to stay in strong vocal shape, nurture my technique, and keep growing as a musician and storyteller.
